Deben Yacht Club, based on the River Deben in Woodbridge is on course to inspire the next generation of sailors after joining RYA OnBoard - the national grassroots scheme which makes it easier to get more young people on the water.

OnBoard gives anyone aged 8-18 the chance to learn to sail by providing low cost opportunities for schools, youth groups and families to have fun afloat.

Hannah Cockle, OnBoard Operations Officer, comments; “It’s great to welcome Deben Yacht Club to the OnBoard programme. Sailing is a fantastic sport no matter what your age, background or ability. We look forward to working with the Club and the local community to get as many people as possible enjoying our great sport.”

Deben Yacht Club was founded in 1838, and today is a thriving club that sails mainly modern dinghies on the upper part of the estuary, close to Woodbridge town centre.

Charlotte Norrbom (Rear-Commodore) said:

'Deben Yacht Club is really pleased to have joined the RYA OnBoard Scheme as we are hoping to encourage lots more young people to take up sailing. We are offering six sessions for free to anyone between 8 and 18 years old. You need to become a Cadet member but once you have a little experience you can then also join in all the other sailing events the club offers. The club has over 20 club boats and they are free to use for Cadet members. We are hoping to get a bunch of youths going this year and then hopefully build a bigger group gradually. Apart from the many skills you can learn from sailing, like team work, decision making, independence and lots more there are great benefits of just being on the water, getting close to nature and enjoying the elements. The DYC is a really friendly club and we're looking forward to welcoming new youngsters to sailing on the Deben at Woodbridge.'

Run by sailing’s national governing body the RYA, OnBoard isn’t about producing champions, although many youngsters do go on to excel in dinghy and windsurf racing. It is about local youngsters discovering what an exciting, challenging, sociable or simply relaxing outdoor activity sailing can be.

As a recognised RYA Training Centre Deben Yacht Club conforms to the highest standards of safety and quality.

Since 2005, OnBoard has helped over three quarters of a million young people try sailing and windsurfing and learn an activity that often stays with them for life.
