Tidal energy developer Minesto has provided key stakeholders with an update on the proposed DG Holyhead Deep Project, a marine renewables development located off the coast of Holy Island, Anglesey. The Project will employ Minesto’s unique tidal energy concept, Deep Green, which uses underwater kites to generate electricity.

In June 2016, Minesto submitted an application for a Marine Licence under the Marine and Coastal Access Act 2009 for the deployment of a single 0.5 MW Deep Green Utility (DGU) device tethered to the seabed and connected to an electricity meter located on a moored offshore buoy (named the DG500 Project).

License granted

A Marine License was awarded by Natural Resources Wales (NRW) in April 2017. Minesto is currently working together with NRW to discharge the consent conditions issued with the Marine License with the aim of commencing installation Q3 2017.

The purpose of the DG500 Project is to demonstrate the first full-scale installation of a DGU, paving the way for a grid-connected commercial deployment called the Array Project.

In May 2015, Minesto secured a €13m investment from the European Regional Development Fund through the Welsh European Funding Office, to enable the DG500 Project.

Minesto has been granted an Agreement for Lease for a 9.1 km2 area (AfL area) for 10 MW from The Crown Estate. An in-depth study analysing the AfL area’s capacity concluded that the area is suitable for future deployment of up to 80 MW installed capacity of DGUs.

Minesto submitted a scoping report to the UK consenting authorities Marine Management Organisation (MMO) and Natural Resources Wales (NRW) in February 2017 for development of an 80 MW site in Holyhead Deep. The scoping report provides more specific details regarding the Array Project and is located on the .

Minesto plan to develop the DG Holyhead Deep Array Project within the AfL area in three phases as part of a ‘deploy and monitor’ strategy which means a gradual expansion of the Array Project over the upcoming years.

Navigational considerations

Minesto is also required to produce an Environmental Statement to support the Array Project Marine License and Section 36 consent. The purpose of this Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) process will be to determine whether there is potential for the construction and operation of the DGUs and associated infrastructure to have any adverse effects on the environment.

This includes consideration of navigational issues via a Navigational Risk Assessment (NRA), as well as an evaluation of potential impacts on sites of European nature conservation importance (Natura 2000 sites).

Open door event

Now a scoping opinion has been received for the Array Project (from NRW and the MMO), Minesto plans to hold a public event on Wednesday, 14 June 2017 at the Minesto UK head office in Holyhead.

The event will be open door between 9am and 6pm, with a short presentation at 7pm to provide both an update on the DG500 Project and the EIA for the future proposed Array Project.

Minesto is collaborating with Morlais Marine Energy (Morlais) who currently manage the West Anglesey Demonstration Zone2 (WADZ), with the aim to jointly develop grid and cable infrastructure for power export for the Array Project. This will help reduce costs and minimise the combined environmental footprint of the two projects.

Should you have any questions/comments on the DG500 Project or the proposed future Array Project, please feel free to get in touch with Minesto at .
