Weston Sailing Club (WSC) in Southampton has worked hard to become a club that offers fantastic sailing to physically disabled sailors.

Through some truly inclusive events the club has seen disabled and able-bodied racing crews sailing alongside each other in various races.  Amongst these was last month’s September Cup, which was won by WSC member Lynne Swan in one of the club’s Challenger trimarans, designed to be ideal for Sailability sailing.  Lynne, who was introduced to the Club by RYA Sailability, beat a host of other classes and abilities.

The club is now pleased to announce that a second of two Challenger trimarans is rigged and ready to go racing. Any disabled sailors, including wheelchair users, near Southampton who want to come and try the boat and join in the racing can get in touch via the website. There is no hiring fee, just a day sailing fee of £10.  This amount is deducted from membership for anyone who subsequently joins the club. Sailors need to be able to transfer independently as the club doesn’t have a hoist or a pontoon.

WSC is a busy, well established, racing club on Southampton Water. Since the club was awarded a £50,000 grant from Sport England Inspired Facilities to extend the slipway by 10 metres in 2011 launching and recovery has been made safer.

Later on, in 2017 donations from SITA Landfill Trust (Now SUEZ) and an RYA Foundation grant enabled a wheelchair accessible toilet and a wet-room shower to be built. A fleet of Challenger trimarans have been regularly visiting the club bringing with them great inspiration for disability-inclusive sailing.

Richard Johnson, chairman of the Challenger Class Association has kindly given the two Challenger boats to WSC on an indefinite free loan. The Association has also paid for the work needed to bring the two boats up to racing standard.
