The RYA is proud to support the launch of the UK’s National Water Safety Forum campaign, Respect the Water. The launch of the new campaign marks the second ever United Nations World Drowning Prevention Day (25 July). The international event provides an opportunity for reflection for those that have lost a loved one through drowning, as well as a chance to highlight life-saving solutions to prevent it.
Last year, 277 people died from accidental drowning in the UK. Led by the World Health Organization, the theme for this year is to ‘Do one thing to prevent drowning.’
We can all play a part in helping to end drowning, if you see someone struggling in the water, fight your instincts to get in the water and attempt to help. Instead, call 999 or 112. If you are at the coast, ask for the Coastguard, if you are inland, ask for the Fire and Rescue Service. Tell the person in the water to float on their back and throw them something that floats, if possible.
As part of the awareness campaign, over 45 landmarks across the UK will be showing their support by lighting up in blue. Some of the locations include: Blackpool Promenade, the National Maritime Museum in Falmouth, Weymouth Pavilion, and the Tower of Refuge on the Isle of Man.
