RYA Midlands OnBoard Blog – November 2022

Did you realise that there is a group of OnBoard Tutors within the Midlands region, who can deliver training and development for your instructors?

During this year, we have grown and refreshed the team of tutors. RYA OnBoard Operations Officer Hannah Cockle provided an update then all went out on the water, running fun sessions.

The windsurfers all had a bit of a laugh, especially as they all fell off. The sailors got a bit competitive going centreboard-less around a buoy.

The outcome is that we have a group of OnBoard tutors who are now ready to come and spend some time with your team of instructors.

A grand day out

If you want to hear more about what your instructors will get out of attending an OnBoard training day, why not talk to people who have attended.

In May, I ran an OnBoard instructor training day at Errwood Sailing Club for a group of their instructors. Similar training days have been run this year at Carsington Sport & Leisure and at Andrew Simpson in Birmingham.

It is an enjoyable day for everyone involved, with both onshore and on the water activities. Here are some of the feedback comments I have received from participants:

  • “A great insight into how to promote, implement and enjoy the OnBoard sessions. A grand day out!”
  • “A positive day learning to build learning mindset – great fun too”
  • “I wish we had known about these days before”

The RYA will fund an OnBoard Tutor to deliver the day. If you are interested in hosting an OnBoard Instructor Training Day at your club or you would like to attend one of these days, please contact me Patricia Ordsmith.

Session cards

Next, I want to share some great news! I recently discovered; the OnBoard beginner session cards for both sailing and windsurfing have been updated and improved.

I can’t wait to get my hands on a copy and see what new ideas are available to try out for sessions both on and off the water.

We won’t have to wait long; these new session cards will soon be sent to all OnBoard club/centres. If you can’t wait for the hard copy, the new dinghy and windsurf cards are available now online to download 👇

Together Fund

There is an opportunity for OnBoard Clubs to apply for funding towards delivering projects for young people in the local community.

The deadline was recently extended to September 2023 which means activity could be delivered throughout the sailing season. To find out more visit Together Fund – Sport England and RYA

Share your stories

I hope you have enjoyed reading my first OnBoard blog and have found some useful information to help you and your club/centre.

Going forward, I am looking for stories you would like to share with other OnBoard Clubs, so other clubs can enjoy your achievements and benefit from your experience.

Please send your stories and pictures to me – I look forward to hearing from you!

Patricia, RYA Midlands Sailing Development Officer
