Performance Sailing
Alongside the Class Association dates for Youth and Junior fleets in 2023, the RYA have several focussed events planned over 2023.
- RYA Youth Nationals 2023 8th – 14th April 2023 Weymouth & Portland National Sailing Academy.
- RYA Scotland Youth and Junior Championships 17th-18th June 2023 – Venue TBC
- Eric Twiname Junior Championship 2023 29th April –1st May Rutland Sailing Club
- RYA Scotland Late Summers 23rd 24th September 2023 – Venue TBC
The RYA Scotland Academy programme is available to the following pathway classes, Optimist, Topper, Windsurf, ILCA, 420 and 29er, open to all sailors regardless of age. Academy coaching is aimed at entry level race coaching for those who are completely new to racing in the class. The Academy training runs through until March, ahead of the main season’s events with full details on the RYA Scotland website. Please remember booking closes two weeks ahead of planned training, so please book ahead.
Participation and Development
We have a number of opportunities for affiliated clubs, centres and organisations to link into over the coming months which will hopefully allow for a sharing of discussions, ideas, challenges and some learning from both Scottish and UK organisations.
RYA Scotland Affiliated Clubs and Recognised Organisations Conference – 4th March 2023, Dewars Centre, Perth
We are excited to be hosting our first in-person conference since early 2020 and this time we will be going to the Dewars Centre in Perth. There will be sessions/discussions around Volunteering, Membership Retention, Cost of Living, Governance, Good Coaching & Training Practice and opportunities to learn from one another in the ‘Carousel of Recognition’ which will showcase some of the great things that clubs, centres and organisations have been doing over the past year.

RYA Scotland Cost of Living Connect Call
– 6.30pm on Wed 7th December 2022
Our first opportunity to connect with other Scottish affiliated organisations is our online Connect Call at 6.30pm (for 1hr) on 7th December 2022. We are looking to find out what the key issues are for our communities, and their memberships, to see if we can help to provide information or signpost people to areas of help. This topic will continue in the Affiliated Conference in March too and the RYA are also looking for some feedback here.
RYA Scotland Development Workshops
The feedback has been excellent on our online Funding workshop with the opportunity to link with others around a common theme has been invaluable – and we know that individual conversations have already taken place

RYA Club Development Sessions
These online sessions are being run every evening for approximately 1hr-90mins from 5th – 9th December on topics such as Club Member motivation, Volunteer Experiences, Governance, Funding, Inclusion. Some of the content, such as funding, may be more England focussed but you should still be able to glean some new information from each of these free sessions.
A further session on Yacht Racing Participation will take place on 11th January 2023.

Coach Education and Development
The 2023 season is shaping up with lots of opportunities to develop coaching for volunteers and paid professionals across the boating community.
The final 3 of the series of RYA sessions for race coaches, instructors and take place in January, February & March.

Booking will open in January for our successful CPD program, where we are increasing the number of locations for practical delivery in order to reach more instructors and coaches across Scotland.

Powerboat (PB) CPD program for 2023.
Having listened to powerboat instructors’ feedback we have pulled a team of RYA trainers together who are developing a multi-layer CPD option for powerboats. We will have bespoke sessions available if you are interested in having something delivered at your venue then email coaching@ryascotland.org.uk
Dinghy and Windsurf Senior Instructor (SI) Course
We are running a joint Sailing and Windsurfing SI course this year at Galloway Activity Centre in April, this is a fantastic opportunity to get qualified for the season ahead. We have some great opportunities to get some insight into what it takes to become a SI below:
