The Regional Training Groups provide the next step up from racing at your club, to racing nationally, or even internationally, with regional training delivered by expert RYA coaches for all recognised junior classes.
Here, Rupert, aged 11, from Essex Yacht Club, explains what it’s been like taking part in the Regional Training Group (RTG) for Optimists.
“This winter was my 2nd year of doing the RTGs. The first year I did it, I only knew one other person, and I felt a bit nervous as I hadn’t sailed away from my home club very often. But I needn’t have worried as everyone was very friendly and I have made great friends on the RTG.
“Training regularly with the coaches has really helped all aspects of my sailing. Each weekend it is focused on something new as well as recapping on the previous lessons. You learn everything from boat rigging, sailing rules, starts and boat handling, everything is covered to help you improve on the race course. The first year, some of it was quite hard for me, but by doing year 2 I feel I have got much better.
“My highlight was going sailing in 30+ knots of wind in Burnham!!! Normally, you wouldn’t sail in such rough conditions, but after lots of classroom work, the coaches helped us to safely launch and go sailing. It was brilliant, so fast!!!
“If you are wondering whether to give the RTGs a go, I would say yes. Try the indicator event and see what happens. It has definitely helped me to become a better sailor and understand the dedication and focus that is needed to succeed. It’s hard work but very rewarding! See you on the water soon.”
