An Innovate UK funding competition: Driving the electric revolution – building talent for the future

The “Driving the Electric Revolution – building talent for the future” competition opened on Monday 9 August 2021.

Innovate UK’s Driving the Electric Revolution challenge, part of UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), is investing up £250,000 in projects to develop future talent pipelines across the power electronics, machines and drives (PEMD) industry. 

This competition will fund a number of ideas that quickly fill gaps in skills, talent and training, with up to £25K available to support each successful project.

The world is turning electric across every sector of society, from energy generation for our homes, travel by road, rail, air or sea, and how things are made. Electric and hybrid transport, domestic appliances, wind turbines and other applications are creating a massive need for next-generation power electronics, electric machines and drives (PEMD). But for the UK to be able to design, develop and manufacture these products, we need to have a workforce with the right set of skills.

We want to fund game-changing interventions, which realistically and significantly meet a UK PEMD talent requirement in the following areas:

  • defining and filling key gaps in the UK’s PEMD workforce and training capability;
  • supporting and promoting equality, diversity, and inclusion within PEMD technology training, manufacturing, or research;
  • outreach and engagement material focussing on PEMD for all ages and levels, in academia and industry.
