Clubs are urged to take a look at applying for grant support from Sport Wales before the latest round of applications closes at the end of January 2024.
The Be Active Wales Fund has grants from £300 to £50,000 for clubs and community organisations for projects supporting equality, sustainability and innovation to improve access to physical activity.
RYA Cymru Wales is reminding all sailing clubs to consider whether applying for grant could support their activities to grow participation, develop their team or upgrade equipment and facilities.
The Be Active Wales Fund has seen more sports clubs than ever before making the most of its grants to get their communities active. But it does mean applications are taking a little longer to process.
Any clubs planning to apply for the Be Active Wales Fund this financial year need to do so by Wednesday 31 January 2024. Applications made after this date will not be processed until April and will be counted in the 2024-25 round of funding.
Funded by the National Lottery, grants aim to improve access to physical activity by supporting:
- equipment that allows more people to participate in sport
- upskilling volunteers in areas where your club lacks expertise or experience
- developing projects that promote physical activity in new or different ways
- using technology to engage more people
- outreach to engage people under-represented in sport and physical activity.

Recent grants awarded by the Be Active Wales Fund have included:
Newport Sea Cadet Corps: Awarded £18,740 towards equipment and training, including a safety boat and developing instructors, including RYA Powerboat, VHF Radio, First Aid, Safe & Fun, Pre-Entry Instructor, Dinghy Instructor and Safety Boat courses, plus Paddleboard and British Canoeing instructor courses.
Menai Straits Heritage Sailing: Awarded £7,500 to support its cultural, community and educational goals, including: rescue and safety boat servicing; equipment: paints and varnishes, oars and paddles; boat tender and outboard engine.
Dovey Yacht Club: Awarded £20,570 towards a new safety boat and the development of RYA Dinghy Instructors to grow inclusive participation, strengthen local engagement and ensure long term club sustainability.
Merthyr Tydfil Sailing Club: Awarded £9,651 to support a more inclusive environment for all, including a new pontoon for easier, level access to the water, and training.
Newport District Scouts Water Activities Team: £13,510 grant towards a second safety boat.
