Boat propelled by laughter wins award at Broadstairs fundraiser

Sophia Kyriacou and Izzy Denby in their 420 (photo above, credit Adrian Trice) won the trophy for the crew judged to have had the most fun on the day at the event. The comment from a RIB crew was “their boat was propelled by laughter”. Sophia and Izzy have previously received RYA Youth Training Fund bursaries to help progress their sailing.

The races

There were three back to back races with an entry of 27 dinghies including visitors from Minis Bay, and three yachts from the Royal Temple Yacht Club (RTYC) Ramsgate who started an offshore race.

The races began in a gusty, off shore, 8 to 12Kts north westerly breeze easing to 6Kts as the day progressed. The resulting flat seas and neap tide made the conditions ideal for racing.

There was a close battle between mother and son crew, Deb and Mark Thomas in their 2000 who won the first two races and the overall winner Paddy Denby in his Phantom who counted two seconds and a first place against Deb and Mark ’s 5th in the last race. Third place overall was taken by Dave Adams in his Streaker posting a consistent string of three fourth places.

Prize giving

The prize giving was held at the Broadstairs clubhouse where Paddy was awarded with the Dyson Dash trophy. There were two additional prizes, first was the RTYC prize for the offshore yachts, won by Mike Brand and his crew on board their X34, Foxy. And of course Sophia and Izzy received their trophy.

The big result of the day was over £2300 raised for the East Kent Pilgrims Hospice. All of the competitors and support team contributed in making this day such a success, and congratulations go to them all.
