Last month the Environment Bill achieved Royal Assent. The Bill is now law and an Act of Parliament.
The purpose of the Environment Act 2021 is to increase the level of environmental protection and introduce quantifiable performance targets which can be monitored.
The legislation makes provisions about targets, as well as plans and policies for improving the natural environment. It also includes a framework for introducing the new Office for Environmental Protection which will oversee the UK’s performance and ability to meet waste, water and air quality targets.
