All in-scope marine developments required to leave the environment in a better state than before
Any developments that occur on the shore or in deep-water areas may be required to financially contribute to environmental projects or design environmental aims into their projects under a Marine Net Gain project announced by DEFRA.
Broadly speaking, marine net gain aims to put the marine environment into recovery. It will do so by requiring that all in-scope developments – wind farms, marinas, slipways, boat yards etc leave the environment in a better state than before, and thereby firmly embed environmental improvement into the heart of infrastructure planning and delivery with the associated additional costs of doing so.
This consultation is asking all interested parties to comment on the proposed principles of marine net gain and DEFRA are particularly keen to hear from marine industries, recreational marine users, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and conservationists, academics, and coastal communities.
DEFRA needs your views and evidence to help it understand the unique nature of the marine environment and to ensure the regime that is developed is fit for purpose.
