Since April 2021, employers across England have been able to take advantage of the £3,000 employer incentive payment for hiring an apprentice – this £3,000 incentive for employers is in addition to the £1,000 available for taking on an apprentice aged 16 to 18 years old or aged 19 to 24 with an education, health and care plan or who has been in the care of their local authority. Employers do not have to pay this back.
These incentives can be incredibly helpful for an employer, especially for a small and medium enterprise (SME) as these payments can be put towards employer costs such as uniform and equipment for the apprentice, travel costs, wages etc, which enables employers to enjoy the many varied benefits of having apprentices in their business.
Benefits of recruiting and training apprentices include:
- Savings on the costs of recruitment
- Increased productivity and quality of service
- Opportunity to upskill current employees, increasing job satisfaction and career prospects
- Increased employee motivation and commitment
Employers can apply for the payment of £3,000 for new apprentices of any age who join your organisation from 1 April 2021 to 30 September 2021. Apprentices who joined your organisation before 1 April 2021 will not be eligible.
To receive the full payment, the apprenticeship must last for at least one year.
