The MCA has released Marine Information Note (MIN) 542 (M+F) Amendment 2 – Life saving appliances – recognised distress signals and advertised alternatives to pyrotechnic flares.

The MIN highlights the risks of using non-SOLAS or non-pyrotechnic distress flares such as Electronic Visual Distress Signals (EVDS).  The MIN 542 Amendment 1 expired on the 1 March 2022, this amendment (2) has been issued solely to extend the expiration date and will expire on  01 March 2027.

This note replaces MIN 542 Amendment 1 and MIN 464 and should be read in conjunction with MGN 280 and MGN 599.
