The recently adopted EU Regulation on batteries will strengthen sustainability standards for batteries and used batteries in Europe, emphasising the circular economy and extended producer responsibility, impacting the boating industry by introducing stricter guidelines for battery disposal and recycling.
The regulation also sets targets for lithium recovery, mandates minimum recycled content, and introduces battery labelling and information requirements, including a ‘battery passport’ and QR code, to enhance transparency for consumers.
The regulation provides that by 2027, portable batteries incorporated into appliances should be removable and replaceable by the end-user, leaving sufficient time for operators to adapt the design of their products to this requirement.
