Christchurch Sailing Club is one of ten finalists in the 2020 RYA and Yachts & Yachting Club of the Year Award, supported by Gallagher, which recognises the outstanding achievement of sailing clubs across the UK and promotes the hard work and dedication that goes into running a successful club.

Public voting will open on Friday 13 December, when you will have a chance to support this SW club if you think it deserves to be crowned RYA and Yachts & Yachting Club of the Year 2020.

Christchurch Sailing Club (CSC) has a strong family ethos and offers a wide variety of sailing and social activities. A fully inclusive club, it has invested in

  • a new training room to help members develop their qualifications
  • extended female changing rooms to support the growth of the ladies' fleet
  • a lift and disabled toilet with baby changing facilities to assist both able and disabled members

Its Junior Sponsorship Scheme helps young members participate in National, European and World championships, achieving British Youth Squad status, it supports local charities and civic events and also maintains a security patrol of the local waterways.

Ted Vary, Hon Sec of the club, commented: "The Commodore, Officers, members and staff of Christchurch Sailing Club are deeply honoured and delighted to have been nominated as the South West Regional Finalist for such a prestigious award. It is a tribute to the efforts of all involved in creating the wide variety of activities available to our members, and enjoyed by all the local civic, community and charitable organisations who make use of our facilities.

“Since its foundation in 1874 the club and its racing fleets have been a prominent feature of Christchurch Harbour and Bay, and a great attraction for visiting yachtsmen and the many tourists enjoying the delights of this historic town. The recognition accorded to us by the RYA and Yachts and Yachting will be a highlight in the annals of our club.”

“We’re delighted to be able to announce this year’s finalists.” said RYA Programmes Manager Michelle Gent. “The Panel were inspired to see how much activity goes on in clubs all year round and the number of volunteers who go that extra mile to make it all happen. It’s been exciting to see the varied initiatives clubs are using to increase activity and engage their membership”.

Rob Peake, Editor of Yachts & Yachting said: “We had a tough time whittling down the high standard of entries this year to the shortlist you see here, but the tougher task is now yours! Yachts & Yachting is delighted to be supporting this competition, which recognises the hard work of club volunteers and shares best practice between clubs."

Awards will be presented and the overall winner will be announced at the RYA Dinghy Show 2020 on Saturday 29 February.
