Youngsters enjoy annual fleet racing event

Keen young sailors from clubs around Devon and Cornwall took part in the hotly contested South West Feva Frenzy 2019 at Roadford Lake on Saturday, 12 October.

The youngsters, aged between 11 and 16, enjoyed a unique fleet racing event: each club entered two boats, but it was the combined score of the two, not individual results, that mattered. Competitors had to make sure their partner boats did as well as their own.

The morning started drizzly, but the predicted rain held off and a 6-8 breeze blew consistently over the course throughout the day. This allowed six races, combining triangle and windward/leeward courses, to be run.

The clubs represented were Cargreen Yacht Club, Plymouth Youth Sailing, Roadford Lake, Royal Torbay Yacht Club and Torpoint Mosquito Sailing Club. The winners were the Royal Torbay Yacht Club/Roadford Lake team, who were presented with the Peter Bartlett Cup; Plymouth Youth Sailing team finished second. Peter Bartlett MBE is a former Trustee of South West Lakes Trust and former Chairman of the RYA South West Regional Committee.

Ellis from Plymouth Youth Sailing commented: “I was warmer than I expected. It was good to have some coaching around the starts and extra coaching before the afternoon session so we could learn.”

Thanks go to Roadford Lake for hosting and Keith Kendall, the Race Officer.
