Skills development sessions for RYA North East region instructors

Dinghy, powerboat and windsurfing instructors are invited to join RYA North East for a skills development day on 22 July at Welton Waters Adventure Centre in Yorkshire.

The aim of the day is to support instructors from across the region with an opportunity to update on current good practice, share ideas and advance their own expertise.

Bespoke sessions will enable instructors to not only refresh their existing skills but also gain input on specific areas of interest which they would like to know more about or develop.

The cost is just £25 for the day and booking is open for the three options – Dinghy, Windsurfing and Powerboat – via the online hub for RYA North East Instructor & Race Coach Courses & CPD.

Paul Adams, Sailing Development Officer for RYA North East, said: “The day’s sessions will be looking at skills development alongside the changes to the current G14 RYA National Sailing Scheme Instructor Handbook and how to implement those – including what people want to do on the day to improve their teaching and their own personal or sailing skills.

“It’s a really good opportunity to catch up with the latest updates in the training schemes and get on the water, and we can tailor the day to the participants, so if there is a particular area you would like to develop or find out more about, we can take a look at that for you.”

As well as individual instructors who may want to sign up, clubs are also invited to consider whether to bring along their volunteers as a group. Ripon Sailing Club, for example, took the opportunity earlier this year to use a Powerboat & Safety Boat Handling Skills Development Day as a refresher for its volunteers and as an ‘away day and team time’ to prepare for the season.

As Paul explains: “The day is a chance to update your skills and enjoy getting on the water with our regional trainers, and for club volunteers to come along and do a bit of team building. It will be a rewarding and sociable day for boosting skills and confidence to make the most of the season.”

Places for the day can be booked as follows:

Windsurfing Courses & OnBoard

In addition to the skills development day, other courses currently available in the RYA North East region include opportunities for windsurfing and OnBoard instructors.

For windsurfing instructors looking to advance their ticket, there are Senior and Intermediate Instructor Prep Days at Yorkshire Dales SC, 12 June and 26 June respectively, followed by Senior and Intermediate Windsurfing Instructor courses at the club in August. These are all bookable here.

RYA OnBoard instructors meanwhile are invited to register for a free or an OnBoard Windsurf Instructor Skills Day at Yorkshire Dales SC on 9 June or an OnBoard Dinghy Instructor Skills Day at Ripon SC on 25 June.
