The RYA is once again welcoming applications for the Trinity House RYA Yachtmaster® Scholarship, an exciting opportunity for those working, or aspiring to work, in the small commercial vessel sector.
Skilled boaters who can prove their dedication to progressing in the marine industry could be eligible for a share of the annual scholarship fund provided by Maritime charity, Trinity House.
Since launching in 2018, the scholarship has awarded more than 29 grants, aiding career progression through training.
Exciting prospects on the horizon
29-year-old Toby Bevington applied for a scholarship in 2020 to further his career in the maritime sector.
“I spent a lot of time gaining experience and training, but the scholarship has allowed me to pursue a career on the water full-time and funded much needed qualifications,” he explains.
Toby first started sailing with the Rona Sailing Project in 2011, completing the RYA Competent Crew course and continuing as a watch leader on a number of their voyages. He went on to work and volunteer all over the world, crewing dive boats, yacht deliveries and building as much experience as possible.
Committed to pursuing a career in the industry, he moved to Plymouth to work for Princess Yachts, with the ambition of raising the funds to work through the RYA scheme in his free time and passed his RYA Day Skipper in 2019.
Since being awarded the training grant, Toby has passed the RYA Yachtmaster Offshore exams for power and sail with commercial endorsements and is looking forward to continuing to progress his career on the water.
He says: “Working on the water is incredibly rewarding and varied, with opportunities to suit everyone. There are many exciting prospects on the horizon.
“The scholarship has made me employable in a timeframe I could never have achieved otherwise, I’d recommend it to anyone.”

The small commercial vessel sector provides a huge and diverse employment opportunity for mariners, both within the UK, as well as overseas. From high-speed experience rides, eco-tourism and windfarm workboats, to racing charters on the Solent, superyachts around the globe and so much more – there is a career opportunity for every taste.

To apply for the scholarship, candidates must be able to demonstrate a high level of commitment and achievement in the industry, as well as a clear intention to work within the small commercial vessel sector. Those keen to enter the industry will be able to show a history of excellence in studies, or in leisure boating activity.
Applications should be supported by an endorsement from the principal of one of the RYA’s network of RYA recognised training centres, where candidates will have shown exceptional boating, navigation and/or leadership skills. Principals can also nominate suitable candidates.
