The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) is reviewing and may be introducing new levels of Workplace Exposure Limits (WEL) for hazardous substances.
WELs form part of the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) and are set for specific hazardous substances and must not be exceeded. In addition, exposure to asthmagens, carcinogens and mutagens must be reduced to as low as is reasonably practicable.
The HSE will continue to review and introduce new WELs and are currently developing a long-term delivery model for the UK. This will continue to focus on those substances where we can have most impact in terms of reducing cases of occupational ill-health.
Independent expert advice will also be sought on any proposals. British Marine will continue to consult with stakeholders on any new or revised limits to be introduced to the UK. While the HSE embeds its UK approach, it will continue to consider, then apply as appropriate, those limits set by the EU that are of significance to the UK.
British Marine members can contact the technical team with any queries about WELs on technical@britishmarine.co.uk.
