World Championship win for Finley Dickinson

The 2023 ILCA U21 World Championship held in Tangier, Morocco showcased many talented young sailors from across the globe battling it out for victory. It was however, British Sailing Squad sailor Finley Dickinson in the ILCA 7 fleet, who gained his first gold medal in a World championship.

The final day of the championship began with an air of anticipation, as sailors headed to the racing area greeted by a northeast-east wind that promised an exhilarating end to the competition. Despite the gloomy skies and intermittent rain, the sailors remained unwavering, knowing that both the weather and the competition could be unpredictable.

The ILCA 7 fleet saw an exceptional display of sailing talent from Finley. With 40 points and consistent performances throughout the event. Oskar Madonich from Ukraine secured second place with 56 points, while Caleb Armit from New Zealand rounded out the top three with 85 points.

Finley said: “Today, as the last day of the Under 21 Worlds, it was very windy. Probably upwards of 25 knots at one point, and there was quite a downwind! Thankfully, I managed to win the race, which was a really good way to end the event. I’d just like to say the event was really well done. And I also liked that the Ukrainian (Oskar) and I fought. Just would like to say that it’s phenomenal that in that kind of wind, he was right on my side and stayed with me all day. He sailed really well.”

Performance Pathway Manager, Jack Grundy shared his congratulations: “A massive congratulations to Finley. He has transitioned into being a full time sailor after finishing his education this year. We have really seen him start to prioritise his fitness which will have helped in those conditions. What a great way to finish off his U21 career. The win will have certainly given him confidence and will undoubtably help launch into his senior campaign.”

In the ILCA 6 fleet, it was Eve McMahon from Ireland who claimed the world champion title with 54 points, followed by Switzerland’s Anja von Allmen in second place with 68 points and Italy’s Carlotta Rizzardi in third with 81 points.

The final race proved to be a true test of the sailors’ character and determination, providing a thrilling and unforgettable conclusion to the 2023 ILCA U21 World Championship.
