Luke Machin, Berthon Lymington Marina Manager, will be taking on one of the greatest challenges of his life after selection to be part of The Tour 21 team for 2022 on Friday.

On 24 June 2022, one week ahead of the professional race, 25 riders will form The Tour 21 team and will take on the full Tour de France route raising over £1m for Cure Leukaemia, the Official Charity Partner of Tour de France in the UK.

From over 300 worldwide applicants, numerous interviews over zoom and evidence supplied to confirm Luke was up to the task, his place on the team was announced.

When asked how excited he was Luke’s response was

“Mega but also slightly nervous. I mean I will be more nervous when I see the mountains I need to climb! The Tour 21 is a bike ride like no other, even for a keen cyclist like myself. I, along with a team of amateur cyclists, will take on the challenge of riding the entire Tour De France course, one week before the professionals, following the route like for like, every single kilometre and every single foot of elevation up and down various mountains.”

The main goal of this ride is to raise £1 million pounds to help Cure Leukaemia and enable the incredible work to continue into research.

“It is awe inspiring the challenge that Luke is undertaking and we are very proud and supportive of him and any Berthon staff that decide to push themselves to their limits and follow their passions. Yacht Broker, Hugh Rayner’s recent marathon time at 3hrs 33 minutes was really quite something. It shows determination and strength of character; all attributes which we welcome and nurture here” commented Brian May, MD, Berthon.

Luke will be documenting his training over the coming months and Berthon Lymington Marina social pages will provide regular updates to his journey on this ultimate adventure. Luke’s justgiving page can be found here where you can view his Strava feed and track his progress.
