Energy support scheme open to residential berth holders

Whilst the vast majority of UK households have benefited from the government’s £400 Energy Bill Support Scheme (EBSS) this winter, only now is the equivalent support available to households not directly connected to the grid, such as residential boaters, through a new online portal which went live on 27 February 2023.

The government now encourages those eligible, including people whose main home is a boat on a permanent residential mooring, to apply for this financial support via the www.gov.uk website.  Applicants will need to have:

  • an email address and phone number (if they have one)
  • their bank account details (a UK current account in their name)
  • Upload proof of address if not already registered for Council Tax payments.

The announcement follows on from the Energy Prices Act, passed last Autumn, which  committed the government to providing an Alternative Fund and British Marine’s repeated calls on BEIS (now Department for Business and Trade) to bring forward this long-awaited support.

Members with residential berth holders may wish to alert their customers to this fund and direct them to the application page on the government’s website
