RDO East Blog June 2023

Hi everyone,

This month will see junior sailors from across the region and indeed further afield coming together at Grafham Water to take part in the Regional Junior Championships on the 17 and 18 June. This event is aimed at a wide range of abilities, and there are a number of fleets so there’s something for everyone. You might not realise that we also run a Rookie Fleet, powered by OnBoard. This fleet is open to those newer to sailing, aged 8-13. Sailors need to be able to sail a triangle course and be at RYA Stage 2 level, although you don’t need to hold a certificate. The Rookie Fleet is being run by experienced instructors so there’s plenty of support, you don’t need a boat either as you can utilise one of the fleet as part of the entry fee, although you can bring your own if you wish. Camping is also available on site, so once you’ve arrived you can relax and enjoy the weekend. For more info please get in touch with jen.miller@rya.org.uk

As I sit here, we’ve had a week of North Easterly winds, whilst not the warmest weather there have been some great sailing conditions and it’s good to see people making the most of the opportunity, whether sailing in club racing, cruising or practising new skills. Speaking of new skills, there has been a significant rise in the number of people ‘winging it’, this new-ish sport has reactivated many people who had perhaps previously hung up their wetsuits. It just goes to show how new activity can make a difference to participation, it doesn’t all have to be foiling, but a change in racing formats, or the addition of new activities such as social sailing and local cruising can often be enough to see an increase in the number of active members. It has been great to see many clubs benefiting from doing just that, please do get in touch should you wish to chat about any aspects of club development.

I am in the process of visiting a number of clubs and centres and creating plans for our development work over the next two years. Part of the value in visiting organisations is to gain feedback and learn about your needs, challenges and successes. I would very much value learning more about your needs/challenges and, if known, the support you think the RYA may be able to help you with. Please do complete this short survey to help me capture your feedback: SURVEY

Finally, we will launch the RYA Club Membership Census this month, we are always grateful for your returns, they genuinely help with our understanding of the club landscape so please do look out for the emails from HQ.

Have a good month.

Robbie
