RYA North East blog – March 2023

Bookings are now open for our RYA North East Regional Training Day at Catterick Racecourse on Saturday 1 April 2023.

This event is for anyone involved in delivering on-water activities at your club or centre – as an instructor, race coach or volunteer – and will provide all the latest updates and ideas for creating a great participation experience, with dedicated sessions for sail, power and boardsports.

Tickets cost just £30 (RYA Members) / £35 (Non RYA Members) with lunch included. You can register and find all the details at RYA North East Regional Training Day.

Instructors get-together

There is also our very own RYA North East Pre-Season Bash just for instructors! This is designed to offer an informal and fun day on the water as a warm-up for the new season with a chance to try different boats, meet up and have some lunch.

Book your place to join us at North Yorkshire Water Park on Saturday 22 April and as with the Regional Training Day, please do share the details with your instructor teams. If you’re an RYA Recognised Training Centre, you should have an email from us with a booking link.

If you’d like to know more get in touch and remember you can keep up to date with all the latest news in our RYA NE Instructors & Coaches group on Facebook. or by following @RYANorthEast on Facebook and/or Twitter.

Club of the Year

It was fantastic to see our regional finalist in the 2023 Sailing Today with Yachts & Yachting Club of the Year Awards – Otley Sailing Club – on stage at the RYA Dinghy & Watersports Show at Farnborough.

If you haven’t already, you can read about what makes Otley SC a stand-out club here. Look out for when these awards come around again for the chance to put your club in the spotlight!

Go Green

Also receiving a special mention was Pennine Sailing Club, awarded a Certificate of Commendation for its commitment to the environment.

The club has taken great strides towards sustainability, including removing single use plastics from its galley, using wind generated power to recharge its tractor batteries, improving energy efficiency and making plans to install solar panels. Check out our Pennine SC report for lots of great ideas if your venue has ambitions to go green.

RYA Volunteer Awards

We all know those people who go the extra mile. They’re always at the club supporting activities on the water, or putting in the hours on the committee or behind the scenes, or front of house in the galley.

The RYA Volunteer Awards are an extra special way to say thank you and nominations are now open for 2023, so please do take a look!

Youth & juniors

For youth and junior sailors there is lots to look forward to this season, with North East & Yorkshire Youth Sailing lining up another great series of traveller events at a variety of inland and coastal venues across the region.

In the meantime, it was impressive to see the close racing and fun at NEYYSA’s inaugural winter team racing championship hosted by Ripon Sailing Club. Well done to everyone who took part or supported this exciting new event for the region.

Take part!

There is in fact plenty for all ages coming up in the region. Dates for dinghy racers include the Filey Regatta over the weekend of 20-21 May, open to all with PY 1250 or below, with a Saturday social and camping available.

There are also lots of opportunities to get some miles under the keel if you’re a big boat sailor. NECRA (North East Cruiser Racing Association) is busy planning its programme for the coming season. Scarborough YC will be hosting the start of the North Sea Race on 23 June and the 707 Northerns at the beginning of July. There are also regattas at Scarborough, Whitby and the Royal Yorkshire YC Regatta at Bridlington, to name just a few.

If you have an event or regatta coming up, let us know or tag us on social media @RYANorthEast on Facebook and/or Twitter so we can share the details to support you.

Until next time,

Sam.
